FREEBIE Interactive Notebooks- 2nd Grade GoMath
One week of school is over. This is the first time I have ever started school before Labor Day and I have to say, I didn't think I would like it at first, but having this weekend to recharge after the first week is actually a really great thing. Amazingly we don't have a full week until October. We have a day off for PD next week, then we have a Friday and Monday off for the Pope coming to Philadelphia. It seems like we won't have a full week of school until mid-October!
I spend most of my first week pushing into general education classrooms with my students and getting to know them. I am starting to teach content in my small pull out groups this week. I teach math learning support so I focus purely on making sure my students are getting as close to achieving the grade level common core math standards as possible. My 2nd grade students will be following the common core standards this year. We will be using the GoMath curriculum as our guide however I will be mixing in Saxon Math and TouchMath. I am presenting most of my content in the form of interactive notebooks that I am creating myself to meet their needs and the common cores objectives. Here are this weeks notebooks! You just need to cut them out and glue

Make Wonder in Autistic Support
One of the huge changes at my school this year is an intensive learning support class that one of my very close friends is teaching.
If you are able and willing please support her classroom!

Classroom Tour
It has been awhile, mainly because the past few weeks have been incredibly crazy with all of the back to school madness. Two weeks of professional development or mandatory staff induction. The first week was an intensive on the Danielson Rubric. The second was everything else they wanted to jam in, including all of the changes that they made for this school year. Language models changed, lesson plan formats changed, curriculums changed, teachers positions changed, needless to say it feels like very little is the same this year! I am determined to make the best of a very different school year, in my new position. I have set some goals for myself for this year:
- Be more organized
- Be proactive in parent communication
- Find more outside resources (PD's, grants, blogs, ANYTHING!)
So far things are going well, my classroom is organized, I have talked to a few parents at dismissal, and I have already gotten a Pets in the Classroom Grant, started a blog and registered for an outside PD in October.
I have had some big changes this year, I will only be teaching K-2 mathematics learning support, so when I was setting up my classroom I got rid of 95% of the literacy components. The only things that stayed were my library and an alphabet chart that I just couldn't see not having for reference! Everything literacy related has been either loaned out to other teachers or is in the lockers outside of my classroom. Here are some pictures of my room after I got all set up! It isn't much but it is home for 8-12 hours a day!

Week One- Chalkboard Reno
Well week one of our two week induction program is in the books. It was over 90 degrees every day and we sat in un-airconditioned meeting every day! We also had a few hours of class time thrown in here and there and I got to finish solving my biggest classroom problem!
When I moved into my classroom last year I had an AWFUL chalkboard that was absolutely covered in adhesive. I had no idea what to do about it and in my first year special ed teacher panic I just covered it. It was basically just a pretty but less than functional wall all year!
I wanted something more functional but still pretty. I had coated the other half of my chalkboard with chalkboard paint, because it wasn't as bad, however it didn't hold up well. I decided I was going to remove the adhesive. I consulted with my friends at the WeAreTeachers Helpline on Facebook and they gave me tons of suggestions to get the stuff off. I tried nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol, goof off, graffiti remover with no luck. I broke one scraper and left one early August day covered in sweat with no progress made! I had a board that looked a bit like this!
Total Cost: $8
Painters Tape- Free ( I had it from painting my bathroom last summer)
Box Cutter- Free (My dad put one in a tool kit when I moved out!)
Hot Glue- $1
Foam Board- $7 (I bought extra too!)

I had a board that looked a bit like this!
I went with my backup of covering it. I decided to recoat the other chalkboard, over my whiteboard and the top of this board, and then create a cork board that was the same height as my current white board. I measured and found out that buying cork squares was going to cost me over $60. So I came up with the idea of Foam Board from the dollar tree. I ended up using 5 pieces to cover the board.
I first created a grid on the chalkboard with painters tape. Applied hot glue to the tape and stuck the foam board on the hot glue. I cut it to fit exactly with a box cutter (who thought to trust me with a box cutter?) I ended up with something like this!
I let it sit for a week while I went on vacation before we started our induction and when I came back it was still stuck to the board! I then just treated it like a typical cork board You have to be a little more gentle with things because the foam board doesn't grip staples as firmly.

Welcome to my blog!
Hi there! I am a 4th year teacher at a bilingual charter school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This year I am going to be teaching kindergarten to 2nd grade learning support in the area of mathematics. I have also taught K-2 learning support in literacy and computer technology over the past few years. I just finished my masters degree in classroom technology this summer and I learned a lot about blogging. I have decided to jump in and start posting what I am doing in my classroom here on my new blog.
My school does not have a lot of resources so I have become a huge DIY-er from my classroom decorations to lesson plans and worksheets. I am going to share some of my better ideas here as well as the daily fun that goes on in my classroom once we get started.
Right now my classroom is a big old mess because we just started our two weeks of PD and classroom prep. Hopefully I will get some pictures tomorrow!
